Verdict: A film like FAN comes once in a decade. The concept is novel and brave but the execution isnt quite upto the mark. The film instead of exploring fandom diverges soon into fanaticism.
Gaurav’s character is morally questionable and had SRK not played him with the conviction that he has, I don’t think he would evoke a tiny bit of sympathy.
Aryan’s character on the other hand is perfectly sorted out.He is the ideal celebrity with the perfect amount of narcissism thrown into him.
They clash many a times but at no point you realize that you are essentially watching SRK v/s SRK and for that he deserves a huge applause. After a long time SRK is actually acting and that is the best thing about the film.
A movie without songs is definitely refreshing, but one that would’ve been shorter on the edit table would’ve helped retain the pitch.
The film starts off well and sets up the plot well until the the intermission. It is here that things go awry and spiral out of the Director’s and Writer’s control. The pace is maintained but logic falters quite a lot.
Maneesh Sharma’s direction is patchy and he has more potential than this.He has been failed big time in the writing department and the excellent cinematography and cutting edge VFX barely cover up for the flaws.
The film ends with a strong albeit predictable climax. The film could have been escalated to another scale had the makers tried to incorporate elements of psychological ambiguity in the mind of Aryan but instead they resort to petty ways on Gaurav’s part to extract revenge who is sly, self-destructing, borderline psychotic and childish.
The best way to enjoy FAN is to marvel upon SRK’s return to serious acting and keeping your expectations on check.Must Watch for SRKians
